What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a type of psychotherapy designed to help folks process and heal from traumatic memories or distressing experiences.
In simple terms, it works by a trained EMDR therapist guiding the person through a series of eye movements or other types of bilateral stimulation (like taps or sounds) while they focus on their traumatic memories or other stressors. The goal is to help the client’s brain reprocess these memories so they no longer cause intense emotional pain or distress and help them tolerate positive and negative emotions.
EMDR helps individuals change how they feel about those memories, reducing their negative emotional charge and sensations in their body and allowing them to feel more at peace with the past.
It's often used for conditions like PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and anxiety. However, it is helpful for many other life stressor and mental health conditions.
EMDR Therapy Sessions
-
Standard EMDR Session (50 Min)
Occurs 1-2 times a week depending on your and clinician availability. Your insurance typically covers the sessions. Number of sessions depending on your process.
EMDR is a unique experience for each person, as the healing process is led by your own inner guidance. Occasionally, past issues or memories may surface that are connected to the current concern, and these can also be addressed with EMDR, sometimes in the same session. It's also common for a difficult memory to trigger uncomfortable emotions or physical sensations. This is normal and typically fades within a few minutes, as long as the EMDR session continues. Over time, the distressing emotion or memory often loses its intensity and seems to fade into the past.

During your time, you’ll learn calming mindfulness and coping techniques, gain insight into the root causes of your current struggles, and dedicate focused time to reprocessing the identified issue until it no longer causes distress.
